EXPLAINER: Five reasons why the Millennials protest against Marcos’ burial at the Libingan ng mga Ba
PHILIPPINES -- After the Supreme Court’s approval, the late President Ferdinand Marcos was buried at Libingan ng mga Bayani (LNMB) last November 18.
SC’s decision to allow Marcos’ burial at LNMB called for protests within and outside the country. Families of the victims during the Martial Law expressed their utter disappointment and anger by raising their placards on streets and recounting their tragic stories in social media.
The protests intensify on November 18 as the late President was finally buried at the Heroes’ cemetery without prior notice.
Most participants in the protests were Millennials or the young generation of today, commonly misjudged as lazy and narcissistic for being babies of technology. Since they frequently involve themselves in protests against Marcos’ burial, their motivation and reasons behind were being scrutinized by Marcos’ supporters. The most prevalent question thrown on them would be:
‘Why are they so affected with the issue, being Marcos interred at the Heroes’ cemetery, when they are not even born during his reign and the infamous Martial Law era?’
While many dispute the millennials active participation against Marcos, they continue to raise their voices along with their witty placards and hashtags “MarcosNotAHero”, “NeverForget” and “NeverAgain.” Many of their organizations attended the Black Friday protest just last November 30. --The Quintessence
